What is Mutual Aid:

According to Dean Spade, mutual aid moves toward the goals of building “a society organized by collective self-determination where there are wide range of options beyond ‘sink or swim.”[i] Black communities have always participated in mutual aid—from borrowing sugar, to bartering services, to the church fish-fry for the building fund. When systems motivated by greed and individual gain fail, it is the mutuality of the community that sustains those who are most vulnerable and provides for their needs. As we support the historic Black community of Altadena, it is critical that we rely on each other to protect, provide, preserve, and prosper our residences, businesses, religious institutions, land, cultural landmarks, and legacy.

Altadena is not for sale and we must save it! Altadena will rebuild. Like the Phoenix, a mythical bird that rises from the ash, Altadena will rise in glory again. We are all we need to get there. Give today!
